  • Bill Perry, Temporary Chair, called the meeting to order. There were no meeting minutes to read.
  • Susan Counts called the roll; 5 members were present, establishing a quorum.
  • Bill Perry stated that the Committee needed to select a permanent Chair. A motion to select Bill Perry as the permanent Chair was moved and seconded. Bill Perry moved to close the nominations. Bill Perry was chosen as the permanent Chair.
  • The members discussed the purpose of the Committee, including narrowing the focus of the broad category of Independent Living to one aspect of Independent Living: affordable and accessible housing.
  • Members formulated the purpose of the Independent Living Committee: to identify barriers to the availability of affordable, accessible housing for persons with disabilities, and to develop recommendations to reduce or eliminate the barriers.
  • A motion to approve the purpose passed, as amended.
  • Members remarked that they prefer face-to-face meetings, especially when hosting speakers. Speakers that the members want to invite include:
    • Bill Aldinger, Florida Housing Finance Corporation;
    • Shannon Nazworth, Florida Supportive Housing Coalition;
    • Karen Koch, Florida Council for Community Mental Health; and,
    • Michael Hervey, Department of Neighborhood and Community Resources.
  • Members discussed setting the next Committee meeting dates. Staff will email members and speakers regarding availability for the weeks of December 10 - 21, 2007.
  • The assignment for members is to ask a person with a disability about his/her housing experience. Each member will share that information at the next Committee meeting.
  • A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.
  • The meeting adjourned at 2:27 p.m.
