A Brief Overview of Insurance Company Rating Services |

Rating services provide a measurement of the financial soundness of insurance companies. Many purchasers of insurance policies and annuities use these ratings to assist them in determining their level of comfort in investing with a particular company. However, such ratings cannot guarantee performance; they merely reflect the professional opinion of the raters about the financial condition (e.g., strength, stability, etc.) of various companies. |

Each rating service has its own analysis methodology and rating system. Therefore, all ratings should be put in their proper context with respect to the rating service’s criteria and the relative position of the rating on the overall scale used. Since any given rating is subject to change, you will want to ensure that you have the most current rating information. You may wish to ask each provider company for a copy of their latest rating report. Or, you could contact the various rating services directly for detailed information regarding their respective rating scale and how to interpret each letter rating. Be sure to inquire as to what written reports are available and if there is a charge. These rating services are: |
