Gwen Cherry Child Development Center
The Gwen Cherry Child Development Center provides care and early education for the young children of state employees and is sponsored by the Florida Department of Education (DOE). The center is located at 908 South Bronough Street, Tallahassee, Florida, on the ground floor of the Executive Building, conveniently adjacent to the Florida Education Center.
The Center serves 85 babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. In organized and attractive indoor and outdoor environments, young children and their adult educaregivers spend their day together - working, playing, learning through intelligent experimentation, and building relationships. Together with parents, educaregivers promote the optimum development of the "whole" child - a strong and healthy body, a sweet disposition, a probing intellect, an inclusive and generous spirit.
Educaregivers at Gwen Cherry understand that young children learn best by doing. A rich set of hands-on learning experiences tailored to each child's age, experience, and culture is provided each day. Activities arise from tasks of daily living, wonders of the natural world and feats in the man and woman-made world. Through pretend play, art, blockbuilding, reading stories, and talking, children practice forming and manipulating symbols of their experiences, laying the foundation for early literacy.
Finally, Gwen Cherry is a micro-democracy in which all members - parents, children, and educaregivers - strive to live according to the Golden Rule - "do unto other as you would have them do unto you." Gwen Cherry families are involved with their children through lunch time visits, field trip accompaniment, mentoring, and Center celebrations, such as our Winder Holiday Cookie Party and Summer Family Picnic. A parent organization provides opportunities for regular parent-center communication.
