Living Green Tip – Green Grocer
Those little labels on apples or squash at the grocery store include PLU codes. Check the PLU code to make sure what you're buying is organic and nongenetically modified.

  • A four-digit number beginning with 4 means it's conventionally grown.
  • A five-digit number beginning with 9 means it's organic.
  • A five-digit number beginning with 8 means it's genetically modified.

PLU Number Examples:
Fuji Apples
#94129 Organic
#4131 Conventional
Granny Smith Apples
#94017 Organic
#4017 Conventional
Gala Apples
#94133 Organic
#4133 Conventional

Remember the Guaranteed Ride Home!
If you carpool, vanpool, ride the bus, walk or bike, you're already saving money on gas this summer. And here's more good news—if you use your "green" commute at least three days a week, you can register for a Guaranteed Ride Home! That way, if an emergency such as illness or unexpected overtime disrupts your day, you are not stuck; a free taxi ride is just a phone call away.

Visit www.commuterservices.org for details or call toll-free 1-888-454-RIDE(7433) for more information. This traffic tip brought to you by Commuter Services of North Florida—program funded by the Florida Department of Transportation and available to the public free of charge.
