~ World-class, state-of-the-art network provides more capabilities and security without increasing costs~
TALLAHASSEE - Florida Department of Management Services Secretary Linda H. South today announced the completed migration of its statewide customers to the new MyFloridaNet data transport network. This migration means increased capacity and security without increased costs to taxpayers. It enables the state's technology to run more efficiently while allowing for communications services to evolve as the state's needs change. The Communications and Information Technology Services (CITS) division within DMS managed this successful migration.
"It's our goal at the Department of Management Services to provide each customer with the best products and services available, without increasing costs to taxpayers," said Secretary South. "The migration of our customers to MyFloridaNet helps organizations throughout the state improve their technological resources with a cost-efficient, world-class data network system."
MyFloridaNet offers state agencies, cities, counties and universities, the most advanced data transport network in the country. By using state-of-the-art Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, MyFloridaNet allows customers to prioritize voice, video and critical data more efficiently. MPLS also significantly increases the state's capacity limits, minimizing the need for network upgrades in the future.
The previous network required customers to use multiple vendor contracts featuring varied pricing to secure the same services that MyFloridaNet streamlines into one agreement. This enables the state to enhance its ability to provide services, including options for faster connections at lower costs. MyFloridaNet improves network capabilities for more than 100,000 state employees and emergency responders without increasing costs, providing each group with a significantly larger and cost-effective private dedicated data network.
Organizations experiencing the benefits of MyFloridaNet include the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Florida Interoperability Network (FIN). The participation of FIN, the state's interoperable radio tool allowing emergency responders on dissimilar radio systems and frequencies to communicate with each other, helps to ensure the safety for Florida's citizens and visitors, which is vital with hurricane season approaching. Other groups eligible include city and county governments, school districts and non-profit organizations.
